Artist's Comments

For Illustration workshop at MICA we had to make a CD booklet with a cover and at least four inside pages for the song of our choice. I'm mostly into narrative illustration, so I chose The Decemberist's "Mariner's Revenge," because it is an excellent, 8 minute tale of revenge on the open seas...and being inside a whale. modeled for about half the characters, the others being made up (unfortunately, I'm afraid it's pretty obvious which ones I had to rely completely on my imagination for >.< )

And then that fateful night
We had you in eye sight
After twenty months at sea

Your starboard flank abeam
I was getting my muskets clean
When came this rumbling from beneath

The ocean shook
The sky went black
And the captain quailed

And before us grew
The angry jaws
Of a giant whale

my personal fav from the whole series.... i think it works even w/o the whale. it's so dark and beautiful. yay dark and beautiful!

Thanks ^_^, yeah, I was afraid that the whale would throw it all off.

this is my favorite... i like the simpler, uncluttered composition and the stylistic treatment of the waves. and the dark - charcoal?- really adds so much to the drama of the image.

Thanks! The whole booklet is done completely in watercolor, outlined in brown Sharpie.
